“An Afternoon of Piano & Song’ – April 2017
On Saturday 8th April and Sunday 9th April enjoy an afternoon of exquisite classical and contemporary music with QLD Music Conservatorium’s classical pianist Crystal smith will perform a selection of great classics. Crystal will also accompany Australian soprano Michelle Ryan with a selection of arias, light opera, classical musical theatre and Celtic music. Michelle comes to us from a recent season at the Berlin Opera Academy, and this year will join London’s Royal Academy of Music. Presented in Flutterbies Cottage Cafe’s Little Shop Next Door, an exquisite afternoon tea will be available during the interval. Champagne and Gin bar will be open from 1:30pm.
Concert tickets are $35 per person.

Michelle Ryan & Crystal Smith
Michelle Ryan is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she studied a Bachelor of Music Performance in Voice and a Diploma of Opera Studies. Here she performed the roles of Beth in Little Women and Miss Pinkerton in The old maid and the thief. Other roles performed recently include Despina with Lyric Opera Studio Weimar in their production of Cosi fan tutte and Zerlina, performed in the Estates Theatre in Prague for the Prague Summer Nights Festival production of Don Giovanni in July of this year. Michelle also performed Frasquita with Berlin Opera Academy’s production of Carmen. Recently Michelle performed with Pinchgut Opera in Theodora by Handel. Future engagements include returning to Weimar to perform with Lyric Opera Studio in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, as the step sister, Clorinda. Michelle returns to Tyalgum after having performed as part of the Tyalgum Music Festival with famed acapella group ‘The Song Company’, and she has been selected this year to begin full time study at The Royal Academy of Music in London. For the Tyalgum concert Michelle will perform a mix of classical arias, operetta, musical theatre and Celtic music.
Crystal Smith is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Music (Advanced Performance) at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University under the tutelage of Natasha Vlassenko. Some highlights of Crystal’s musical career include being a finalist in the Basil Jones Sonata Prize 2015, and receiving the Victoria Chalmers Education Excellence Award 2015, Most Promising Pianist Tweed Valley 2015, G.H. Stainlay Memorial Award 2014, and Young Conservatorium Nora Baird Keyboard Award 2014. Crystal performs regularly in community service for the elderly in nursing homes and retirement villages. She is also an accompanist for AMEB exams, a member of the Accompanist Guild, and a regular pianist for the worship of God at Salt Church Currumbin. Crystal has participated in masterclasses with Ian Munro, Gerard Willems, Duncan Gifford, Christopher Norton and Ayesha Gough. Crystal has performed at Flutterbies several times, most recently in September last year alongside soprano Jenna Dearness-Dark. At this concert Crystal will be performing a selection of the great piano classics and will also be accompanying Michelle for the opera selection.
