“TYALGUM will host the first performance of Australian composer and pianist Fiona Joy Hawkins later this month.
Tweed photographer Ken Ball met Hawkins in 2006, when he photographed her for his book Happening Women.
Soon after, the pair developed a creative partnership.
Within a year, they’d created Blue Dream, a boxed set of Hawkins’ music coupled with Mr Ball’s book of photographs to accompany each track.
The duo hoped to turn the project into a live performance, with projections of Mr Ball’s images accompanying Hawkins’ performance.
“But venues with grand pianos are as rare as hens’ teeth,” Mr Ball said.
“When I discovered that Flutterbies had been given one for The Little Shop Next Door, l suggested that they may like to have Fiona perform there.”
With Hawkins often performing overseas, Mr Ball said it became difficult to lock in a date.
“Time slipped by very quickly as Fiona now performs mostly in North America and we couldn’t establish a date that suited her and the venue,” he said.
“When Fiona knew she would be back home by the end of last year, we locked in January 31 as the concert date, so it has been a long dream realised.”
Hawkins will perform An Afternoon with Fiona Joy, including some tracks from Blue Dream, along with some of Hawkins’ more recent compositions, at Flutterbies Cafe’s Little Shop Next Door on Saturday, January 31.
Doors open at 2pm for a 2.30 start. Tickets $35 per person, $40 with afternoon tea included. Bookings essential, call 0488 713 241.”
